Ancient Roman Costumes – Hail Caesar This Halloween
Ancient Roman costumes take in what we refer to as the Ancient Roman civilization. This spans from the time when there was a Roman Republic in around 500 BC through to the Holy Roman empire that had it’s last hurrah’s in the 1400s. Of course the most celebrated time for Ancient Rome was during the time of the Caesars when Roman first became an empire (or was ruled by a dictator for want of a better word).
When people are looking for ancient Roman costumes fir the Halloween party or some other dress up occasion this is what they are thinking about. They are thinking of Caesar costumes and imagine being Julius Caesar (the first Caesar) or other famous emperors like Augustus, Claudius, Caligula or Nero. They may even think of Marc Antony who tried to become the supreme ruler of Rome, along with his lover Cleopatra.
Most of these sorts of costumes involve some form of tunic or toga outfit and a pair of sandals. It sounds pretty straightforward but if you want to stand out from the rest of the crowd, you really have to add a few extra touches to it.
After all, you are going as a Caesar. You want to look more important than the plebeians as befits your status as supreme ruler of the Roman empire. So don’t wear a plain old white toga or tunic. Go for something more regal or imperial – black and red are strong colors and symbolized Ancient Rome. So go for a red or black tunic. You also want some arm and leg gauntlets or jewelry to show you are important and maybe a laurel to wear around the head.
Other ancient Roman costumes might include Roman soldier costumes or gladiator costumes. Many of the films that we make of this time in history often deal with the fighting parts and the action. I guess it makes the history come a live a bit more and elevates the emotional tension for viewers. Consequently when we think of ancient roman costumes we think of gladiator outfits or soldier costumes.
These types of costumes are basically suits of armor, helmets and swords. People love to dress up in this sort of gear as it also gives them a chance to re-live their childhood, when they may have played sword fighting with their buddies or other sorts of role play.
