People often associate the rule of Caligula as Roman Caesar in 37 BC with the phrase ‘absolute power corrupts absolutely’. He was reported to have been quite reasonable at first but within a few years his behavior had spiraled down into sadistic and perverse acts that appalled the people around him. His rule only last a little over 4 years before he was assassinated at the behest of Senators.

Whether all his peculiar behavior was actually true or was just the writings of people that had an axe to grind with him or maybe were covering their tracks and justifying their own behavior in murdering him we will never know. But it makes a pretty damn good story that’s for sure.

I mean he was supposed to have made his horse a Consul and priest. He had people executed at the drop of a hat to please his sadistic whims like whole crowds at a gladiatorial event. He was supposed to have married his sister (which wasn’t that strange in those days). He turned senators into his servants. Reports from the time suggest he was mad and deluded. He thought or himself as a god and wanted statues and temples made for him as a god.

All in all, a pretty stand up sort of guy…so just the kind of costume you want for Halloween !

The Caligula costume is a fairly simple costume. It is a black tunic or ankle length robe. Black to emphasize his wickedness and depravity maybe ? The costume also comes with a Roman style belt and arm cuffs. These are also in black with Imperial Roman color red accents. There is also a red drape that is worn across the shoulder and a crown or head wreath to indicate that he is Caesar or Emperor of Rome.

You certainly wouldn’t be recognized as Caligula if you wore this costume but you would certainly look like some Roman dude or some guy from ancient history. So if you really want to push the Caligula line, learn a few facts about him or just act really wild at the party. I mean, Halloween is only once a year so you might as well let your hair down a bit.
