Whilst a gladiator costume is not exactly a Roman soldier costume, it is an outfit and activity that is totally linked to the Roman empire. And of course, the outfits that these fighters wore were similar to the type of gear a Roman soldier might wear into battle. Gladiator costumes that you can wear today are available for both men, women and children.

The male costumes tend to be copies of the original outfits (or at least how they have been portrayed in films and the like). The child costumes are usually just copies of the male outfits but obviously smaller. The female costumes tend to be sexy costumes that have a few gladiator type touches to give the look a bit of character.

The male gladiator costume initially featured has been discontinued for some reason so I substituted this new one at the top of the post. It is actually the Conan the Barbarian costume but it has some elements that make look great as a Gladiator style costume.

It is not as elaborate as some full armor costumes but the padded muscles are sure to make a good impression at the party.

The costume comes with a faux leather apron and tunic (or skirt) and  also calf and wrist guards. One the left arm is a patterned long sleeve that is meant to look like chain mail armor.

The female gladiator costume is that mix of sexy look with warrior style accessories. It consists of a vinyl bikini style top with metallic mesh tank overlay. There is a matching vinyl skirt with metallic mesh lining. A sword, shield and headband complete the look. Comments on this costume say that it is smaller than they expected so check out the size before you buy this outfit. Even so, it’s sure to get you plenty of attention at the party.

The child costume is a copy of the outfit worn by Maximus in the movie that made Russell Crowe a movie superstar and revived the popularity of tunic and sandal epics from yesteryear. It consists of a  white tunic, black body armor with attached gray cape and matching shoulder guard. It also comes with a helmet, shin guards and black wrist wraps. Sure to be a favorite with boys who want to play at gladiators.

Gladiators and Gladiator games were seen as an essential part of the entertainment and social life of Roman citizens. Romans would go to the games just like we might go to a football, baseball, basketball or soccer game today. Champion gladiators were heroes of the average person right up to the Caesar and his entourage. They were the Roman equivalent of the sporting stars that we adore today. However, Gladiators would often fight to the death and had far more to lose than a basketball game.

At the center of the Roman empire was Rome and within Rome, the Coliseum was the center of all gladiator games. These games became more and more elaborate, as the audience grew bored with simple one on one fights. Team fights might be organized. Men against animals might be another. Captured prisoners from far flung regions of the empire might be pitched into the battles to add a bit of variety and color to the events. The early Christians were also persecuted in the Coliseum as part of the entertainment.

This form of entertainment gradually fell out of favor as the Roman empire began to crumble.
