This is a new style of Roman gladiator costume. It is significantly different from the other gladiator style costumes that are available. The helmet seems to look more Greek or Spartan in design. And the gold colored armor is also different from previous versions that were dark or silver colored. The overall affect is a brighter costume which is probably good for getting noticed in parties and other events.

I think the previous gladiator costumes were largely influenced by the popular movie (that is 10 years old now….doesn’t time fly). This one seems to be partly inspired by the movie 300 which has nothing to do with Rome or Romans but let’s not quibble over the odd 100 years here and there.

The costume looks really good but also seems to be very comfortable to wear. You see, the armor is not metal or plastic but made of a polyester material around the waist. So it should be comfortable to wear (by comparison to a suit of armor anyway). The chest plate fits onto the polyester tunic underneath and should also be fairly comfortable to wear.

The buckle and long red cape again have overtones from a Spartan outfit or maybe even a Praetorian guard or Roman soldier costume. I can’t imagine a Gladiator wearing a cape, especially in the heat of battle when he was fighting lions, tigers, bulls, all sorts of other animals or other gladiators. It’s bound to get in the way isn’t it ? Maybe the gladiator wore a cape as he walked into the arena and took it off when the battles commenced.

Maybe he was a champion who had a special costume and cape. This might explain it, as gladiators were Roman equivalents of sporting superstars today. Especially those that made it to the Coliseum and lasted a few times. They were revered by the audiences much like we look to football players. Of course the consequences of them failing in their ’sport’ was far more serious.

The finishing touch to this costume is the helmet. Remember that the helmet in the picture does not come with this costume but has to be purchased separately. You could probably get away with not having it but wearing the helmet makes a great first impression and really lets people know who you are – some ancient, olden times soldier guy.

The helmet looks like a Greek style helmet with a long red plum on top. Wear it to make an entrance then you can take it off, so that you can socialize and drink the odd Margaritas, Corona or other tasty brew.

If you really want to make the costume stand out, you might want to get a replica sword and even a shield. You might want to get some sandals as show here that have a distinctive look or you could simply wear an ordinary pair of sandals.
