Roman Empress Costume
So this is not quite a roman soldier costume but it is certainly a pretty important character in the Roman empire, it is of course the Roman Empress costume, the outfit that might have been worn by the wife of the Emperor. It would make a distinctive and elegant looking costume for a Halloween party or Roman themed occasion, like a toga party.

This Roman empress costume includes a long white gown or dress with a attached drape in imperial Roman burgundy. Both the dress and the drape have gold trim to make them more distinctive from the average toga or Roman gown. The costume also comes with gold medallions and matching armbands.
Since the Roman empire lasted well over 1000 years there were many Empresses but in terms of history we tend to remember the first ones or those that did memorable things. Some were as political and scheming as their husbands. On of the most ruthless and manipulating Empresses was known as Agrippina the younger. Her name changed as she got older and more influential.
Her brief resume runs as so. She was sister to the infamous Caligula who become mad and deranged with power. She married the Emperor Claudius, who was her paternal uncle (this might be frowned upon or even illegal nowadays but it wasn’t such a big deal in those days). She then used her influence over Claudius to get her son (who would become known as Nero – the guy that played the fiddle while Rome burned from legend) to become first in line to succeed Claudius. She was then implicated in poisoning Claudius.
Another notable roman Empress was the third wife of the original Caesar (Julius Caesar). She was known as Calpurnia. She was believed to have had premonitions of Caesar’s death and begged him not to ‘go to work’ on the day that the senators got their knives out. In the aftermath of the death she sided with Marc Antony for control of Rome. This proved to be a poor judgment as he was defeated and killed.
Calpurnia has featured in many important pieces of literature, notably William Shakespeare’s play. This has ensured that her name ‘lives on’ and she is recognized as one of the more important Roman Empresses.
So why not go as Agrippina or Calpurnia to your next Halloween party. Team it up with the Caesar costume or some other Roman costume if you have a partner. You will look like the perfect couple.
