Roman Senator Costume
Apart from the Caesar, the soldier and the gladiator, probably the next best known characters from the Ancient Roman civilization are the Senators. These where the guys that were always in the background, conniving and scheming behind the Caesars back. Quite a few times they did more than just talk about the Caesar behind his back but would stab him in the back too. Julius found that out all too late. So this Halloween why not dress as a Roman senator costume and hatch a few plots against the Caesar.

This Roman senator costume is similar to the Caligula costume in that it is a black full length robe or tunic with matching belt. It has gold trim around the hem and the arms. There is also a red shoulder sash to give the costume a bit more definition and color. Eating grapes is optional.
This is a simple costume that will convey that you are some dude from ancient history. Given that it is a black color and not the standard white, people will have an inkling that you are someone special from that time. You can tell them you are a Roman senator. But who were the famous Roman senators ?
Well, the most famous has to be Brutus. He was the main conspirator behind the assassination of Julius Caesar on the ides of March (mid March according to the Roman calendar). As already mentioned, senators didn’t like to ruin their expensive manicures so they often got other people to do the dirty work. However in the case of the death of Julius Caesar they were forced to act themselves.
Julius Caesar had basically installed himself as a dictator of Rome and chosen his name as the name to be used as supreme leader of the empire. This worried the senators that felt that he had too much power . He controlled the army and could pretty much do whatever he liked. This scared the senators that had been used to a more democratic way of making decisions. Thus they decided that Caesar had to die. They invited him to the senate and after a brief wait, they surrounded him and bludgeoned him to death.
Strangely enough the senate then issued an amnesty of all the killer, absolving them of the crime. So if it’s not a Roman soldier costume this Halloween then why not go as an esteemed but ever so corrupted Roman senator.
